Raymond Hughes – Watercolour – Promenade Dress With Spencer c1816

This a original waterclour study of a dress design titled “Promenade Dress With Spencer c1816 (English)” by Raymond Hughes (d2015). It is a large scale brightly coloured painting in watercolour with white body colour highlights of a flamboyant period ball gown. From a series of 4 that we have for sale.

Raymond Hughes (d2015) was a well known award winning dress and costume designer for film and stage. His filmography includes Return to Oz (1985), Young Sherlock Holmes (1985) and The Musketeer (2001). In 1977 he won an Emmy for “Outstanding Achievement in Costume Design for a Drama or Comedy Series” for “The Palliser” and has been nominated BAFTA TV Awards (The Far Pavilions and Prince Regent).

This a original waterclour study of a dress design titled “Robe a la Polonaise c1780” by Raymond Hughes (d2015). It is a large scale brightly coloured painting in watercolour with white body colour highlights of a flamboyant period ball gown. From a series of 4 that we have for sale. This comes with a sample of fabric attacted to the paper.

The painting is presented mounted and framed. Inscribed on the reverse “Miss Olive Wood A.R.M.S (Exhibitor RA) 51 Gilkes Cresent, London SE21”

Olive Wood (fl. 1914-1933) was a miniature painter and illustrator of children’s books. She trained at the Clapham and Camberwell Schools of Art and lived and worked in Dulwich Village, London. exhibted at the Royal Academy and at the Society of Women Artists.

Maud Tindal Atkinson (1875-1954) – “Sleeping Beauty” – Original Watercolour

A super fine original watercolour painting of a knight encountering a sleeping princess entombed in a glass coffin. Almost certainly the original painting used to illustrate a childrens’ book, perhaps “Sleeping Beauty”.

Amy Maud Tindal Atkinson (1875-1954) was a successful artist illustrator born at Shortlands in Kent. It is understood that she studied at Art Department of Kings College for Women in Kensington c1905. She was a successful artist; exhibiting 15 works at the Royal Academy from 1906 to 1937. She was also the subject of a painting by Byam Shaw entitled “Maud, Daughter of His Honour Judge Tindal Atkinson.” which was exhibited at the Royal Academy.

Maud Tindal Atkinson – “Frog Prince” – Original Watercolour

A super fine original watercolour painting of a young prince with a frog at the foot of his bed. Almost certainly the original painting used to illustrate a childrens’ book, perhaps “The Frog Prince”.

Amy Maud Tindal Atkinson (1875-1954) was a successful artist illustrator born at Shortlands in Kent.
